Excerpt from Memorials and Letters, Vol. 2: Illustrative of Life and Times of John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee These last volumes of Memorials and Letters illustrative of the Life and Times of Viscount Dundee, bring to a close our long and laborious researches intended to redeem, from the mists of faction and the myths of fanaticism, those two important chapters of "The Troubles" in Scotland, which may be indicated by the titles, Montrose and the Covenanters, and Dundee and the Conventiclers. Many literary demerits belong to the desultory commentaries which our researches have produced. But they will be found to embrace a great collection of interesting and valuable historical documents, hitherto unpublished, illustrative of the period between the accession of Charles the First, and the advent of King William; and also to have exposed a vast amount of calumnious falsehood with which Scotch fanaticism had debased the history of the country. Those low polemics had succeeded, among other deplorable results, in over-laying, and utterly disguising, two of the noblest and purest characters that adorn the Annals of Scotland in times when there were few public men of whom that country had reason to be proud. The murderer Montrose, the devil Dundee, are familiar characters in Scotch history. Indeed the epithets had become almost hallowed, as if truly descriptive of two great enemies of religion and humanity whom history could not paint too black.
