Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Selection From the Correspondence of the Late Macvey Napier, Esq. As Editor of the Encyclopoedia Britannica and the Edinburgh Review, my Father carried on an extensive correspondence with literary men, which he bequeathed to me thirty years ago, and of which this volume contains a selection. He was in the habit of preserving the letters of his correspondents, but as they were not equally careful of his, a few only have been recovered. A small impression of this correspondence was some time ago printed for private circulation: but in consequence of the representations that have been made to me, from various quarters, and even from the United States, that a correspondence of so much interest ought to be more accessible, I have determined to publish it. Some additional letters have been introduced. My Father was born on the 11th of April, 1776, and educated at the universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. In, 1799 he became a member of the Society of Writers to the Signet, and in 1805 he was appointed their Librarian. In this year he wrote his first article in the Edinburgh Review. The following notes from Jeffrey refer to that article, and contain some curious items: - "April 20, 1805. Sir, - I enclose our booksellers´ allowance (£5) for your excellent account of Degerando, and shall be happy to receive any overtures for a successor to him. - Your obliged and obedient servant, F. Jeffrey." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
