As is well known, the progress of Colonel St. Leger was stopped at Fort Stanwix; the advance of Arnold, despatched by Schuyler, compelling him to raise the seige of that Fort and retreat into Canada - a circumstance which left Schuyler and, later, Gates, free to concentrate the American forces in opposition to the advancing army of Burgoyne.
