Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Growth of the Spirit of Christianity, Vol. 2: From the First Century to the Dawn of the Lutheran Era We must now retrace our steps, to consider the character of that new power which was destined to interrupt the progress of mankind. We mentioned incidentally in the previous chapter, that Pepin, the father of Charlemagne, had obtained the concurrence of the Bishop of Rome in the organization of a political revolution. The significant fact here is, that Pepin should have deemed such a concurrence to be of the slightest value, - that in an age when might was right, and the physically strongest were the survivors, he should have esteemed the sanction of a Roman bishop to be a source of additional power. It is one of those facts which, though insignificant in themselves, are yet like the quivering of the leaves, indicative that a wind is blowing.
