Excerpt from Seven Years at Eton: 1857 1864 I have to thank the great many old Etonians who have written to me offering recollections of their own for addition to this volume. It has been impossible for me to reply to all these kind letters, or to avail myself in every case of the interesting matter they contained. Corrections - they were few - have been attended to, and in certain instances I have published facts or opinions of an exceptionally noticeable character. The most important of these addenda will be found at the end of Chapter xxviii., and I beg to call attention to it, because it furnishes a very plain vindication of the standard of scholarship that existed at Eton during the last year of Dr. Goodford´s head-mastership, just before the inquiries of the Royal Commission on Public Schools. The list of the sixty-five boys who were in Dr. Goodford´s division at Christmas 1861, with a record of the honours they won in University and other examinations, will assuredly challenge comparison with any similar list that could be issued from no matter what other Public School. It is a list which will place Dr. Goodford, as a Head-Master, very high in the estimation of everybody who reads it.
