To those who have contributed "fresh flowers from the garden of the heart," as well as to those who have so courteously and obligingly responded to our requests for a few blossoms from their own collections, the Editor would express his grateful acknowledgements; at the same time observing that, deploring the wholesale piracy of many compilers, he has carefully avoided quoting from the works of any writer without permission. Should the names of any living Poets be found wanting, whose contributions would have lent additional graces to the volume, such omissions must not in all cases be attributed to the Editor´s neglect, permission having sometimes been withheld, or often restricted to a single extract.
