Excerpt from A Memoir of John Leeds Bozman: The First Historian of Maryland; A Paper Read Before the Maryland Historical Society, May 9th, 1887 In order that credit may be given where it is most justly due, it is proper to say, and to say distinctly, that much the greater part of what has here been related of both John Leeds and John Leeds Bozman, was derived from memoranda and private lettere of that highly accomplished and most honorable gentleman, John Bozman Kerr, whose natural abilities, extensive learning and large acquaintance with Maryland History should have made him the successor of his great uncle. Other persons, most of whom have now passed away, were consulted with reference to Mr. Bozman´s habits and appearance, and the information thus obtained has been cautiously used; but for his character and opinions the chief reliance has been placed upon his own writings. The county records and newspapers have given but small contribution to our knowledge of a life exempt from public haunt. His name has gained admittance into some of the Biographical Dictionaries, but the notices of him are exceedingly meagre and imperfect.
