Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from John Watts De Peyster, Vol. 1 General John Watts de Peyster was one of the unique characters of his generation. He will be known to posterity as the first notable military critic produced by America - the first to treat the battles and campaigns of our great conflicts in the spirit of a true philosophy of the art of war. He sprang from an old family, of Flemish origin, whose history has recently been traced back for seven hundred years. For centuries it was prominent in the public affairs of mediaeval Ghent. Transplanted to Holland, on account of religious persecution, it thrived in Middlebourg, Haarlem, and Amsterdam, during the brilliant period of Dutch supremacy, and then crossed to the New World. Here it had maintained a conspicuous eminence for seven generations when General de Peyster was born. He became its most distinguished representative. Effecting widespread reforms in the Militia and in the Fire Departments of the State of New York, he rose to the rank of Brigadier-General, visited Europe as Military Agent of his State, became Adjutant-General, and, by a special act of the Legislature, was created Brevet Major- General for meritorious services before and during the Civil War. He was a voluminous author. His works include poetry, drama, and innumerable monographs covering an almost incredible range of subjects. The most valuable, of a military or historical character, are notable for their erudition. General de Peyster´s peculiar genius found complete expression in military criticism, military history, and military biography.
