Wharton, parents noted for their intelligence, piety and influence in the community. He was the youngest of eight children, and as such was the idol of his parents and brothers and sisters. His mother died when he was thirteen years old, and when he most needed a mother´s care; for it was when the storms of war were beating in all their fury upon the land, destroying homes and driving the scattered members of our happy family circles into situations of danger, and often of demoralization and ruin.
