At that period I had not read Lord Brougham´s "Characters of Distinguished Statesmen," nor was that work perused by me until after I had finished the characters which I had intended to sketch. My reason for mentioning this circumstance arises from an apprehension that I might be supposed to entertain the vain-glorious desire of entering the lists with Lord Brougham. Very shortly after the commencement of my task I met with a domestic calamity. This suspended the undertaking for several months. A second, a third, a fourth interruption took place, so that the time expended on the book has not been very considerable, as perhaps the reader may very soon detect.
