Excerpt from A Diplomatist´s Wife in Many Lands, Vol. 2 From 1864 to 1866 the French troops were gradually being withdrawn from Rome, in accordance with the arrangement entered into between Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel, the latter having given his word that in return for this concession to Italian sensibilities the Pope should never be molested in the diminished territory which still remained to him. So, on the 11th of December, 1866, the last detachment of French soldiers embarked at Civita Vecchia for Marseilles, and the garrisoning of the city devolved upon the Pontifical Zouaves, a corps of volunteers of various nationalities, first inaugurated in the troubles of 1860, by General Lamoriciere, under the title of the Légion d´Antibes. Since that time their numbers had considerably increased, and by the end of 1866 they were so strong and well disciplined that they were felt to be quite competent to protect the Holy Father from any attacks of irresponsible revolutionaries, the only danger apparent, since the King had so publicly and so solemnly disavowed the old Cavour programme of annexing Rome and the Papal Domains.
