Excerpt from Report of the Conference on Teachers Institutes Held at the University in Conjunction With the Champaign-Piatt Joint Teachers Institute, August 3-7, 1914, Vol. 12 In the fall of 1910 the Director of the School of Education of the University of Illinois proposed to the Committee on Summer Session that a conference on teachers´ institutes be held at the University under the auspices of the Summer Session and in conjunction with the annual teachers institute of Champaign County. The plan, however, was not at that time deemed feasible by the Committee. The need for such a conference continued to impress the members of the School of Education and others with whom the project was discussed. Mr. C. H. Watts, Superintendent of Schools of Champaign County, was from the first an advocate of the plan and approved the proposal that the conference, when held, should make use of the county institute for the purposes of illustration and demonstration. The conference was finally announced for the summer of 1914. The plan included a joint institute of Champaign and Piatt counties at the University. Superintendent Charles McIntosh of Piatt County indorsed the project of the conference and cooperated with Superintendent Watts and the University School of Education in making the necessary arrangements. The two counties and the University shared the expense of the institute. The sessions both of the institute and of the conference were held in the University buildings.
