The expositions which follow are reprinted from the British Weekly. Throughout I am constantly indebted to the works of Dr. Neale and Mr. Spurgeon, and especially to the writings of Mr. Arthur Edward Waite. Mr. Waite has been good enough to help me with many valuable suggestions. The original translation of the poem by St. John of the Cross has been contributed by my friend and colleague, Miss Jane T.
