In the space at our disposal, it is a moral impossibility, - even if it lay within our power, - to deal with such an immense theme as adequately as its intrinsic importance and absorbing interest demand. Our only wish is to give the reader a practical working knowledge of the present position of the critical enquiry into the Gospel-story, and to record the main results achieved by Biblical scholarship.
