Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The National Bereavement: A Sermon on the Death of Abraham Lincoln, Delivered April 23, 1865, in the Presbyterian Church, Newburgh And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. - 2d Chronicles 35 : 24. There are certain hours in the life of man when the heart is crushed with sorrow, when nature seeming to weep in sympathy with him draws its sombre curtains around his dwelling, and when hope that has lighted and cheered his soul takes wings and flies away. Such an hour, no doubt, most of you before mo have seen, when cruel death entered your dwelling and rudely snatched away a cherished idol and left yon sad, desolate, and alone under the shadow of the grave; when the soul stood with mute astonishment before a world moving on as usual, and felt as if all business should cease, the sun should stand still in his course and the wheels of nature cease their revolutions. Not unlike this sad state is the condition of millions in this land at the present time. The darkness of the tomb fills almost every household, the cry of lamentation goes up from millions of hearts and they mourn as one mourns for an only son and are in bitterness as for a first born. The Nation Mourns. It is an hour of mourning in its history, in the cause of civil liberty and wherever the telegraphic wires, trembling with the sad news, tells the mournful tale; truly it is a night of Egyptian darkness. The first-born in the land has been slain. The President of the United States has been assassinated - a martyr to civil liberty.
