Excerpt from Chronological Account of Remarkable Occurrences, From the Commencement of the French Revolution to the 31st of December, 1815: Extracted From the Belfast News Letter, Commencing January, 1816 August - After the dismissal of M. Necker, the French Minister of Finance, M. Calonne, who succeeded to that office, finding the finances in great disorder, presented a memorial to Louis XVI advising him to call a meeting of the Notables, under whose influence and sanction a reformation might be effected of whatever was vicious in the constitution of the state. September 29, A treaty of commerce and navigation between Great Britain and France was signed at Versailles. 1787. February 22, The assembly of Notables was held at Versailles; it consisted of 144 persons, amongst whom were seven Princes of the Blood, nine Dukes and Peers of France, eight Field Marshals, eight Councillors of State, and eleven Archbishops and Bishops. April 8, M de Callone, French Minister of Finance, was dismissed from his employments, and was succeeded by the Archbishop of Toulouse. May 25, The Notables having displayed a refractory spirit, they were dismissed by the King June 6, Lord George Gordon was tried in the Court of King´s Bench, London, for a libellious publication against the Queen of France, found guilty, and sentenced to pay a fine of 500l. and to be imprisoned for two years.
