Excerpt from Frivola This volume owes its appearance to the pressure put upon me by my readers, who have asked me to republish, and so make more accessible to them, some of the Fugitive Pieces which it contains. The first paper appeared as a letter to The Athenæum of January 10, 1880, when the facts were very fresh in my memory; but I did not give it the title which the astute and sagacious editor of that journal invented. I am not an antiquary, and lack all those qualities which an antiquary ought to be gifted with, and I never pretended that I had seen a Ghost, nor do I quite know what a Ghost is.
