Following afar off so great an example, I have striven in these volumes to bring before my readers the man John Churchill whilst I relate the Duke of Marlborough´s feats of arms. There is, both at home and abroad, ample material for the history of his wars in Queen Anne´s reign, but there is little to be found which bears upon his domestic life, or illustrates the inner working of his curiously constituted mind. After a careful study of my subject, I found it would be impossible to make the reader understand Marlborough´s character and actions without giving a brief account of the picturesque period in which he lived and of the people with whom he associated.
