Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from The Bethrothed Lovers: I Promessi Sposi The great writer of the world may perhaps be divided into two classes, one of which includes men who have written numerous great works, and who have continued their literary activity, and displayed their mystery of thought and language from youth to age. Among such Shakespeare, Goethe, Victor Hugo, Sir Walter Scott, will at once occur to the mind. The other class rest their fame upon one or two great works, which shine perhaps the more brilliantly for their comparative isolation. Among these may be reckoned the author of I Promessi Sposi, who has left no other work comparable with it in scope and merit, and who practically wrote nothing after having attained supreme rank in his country´s literature. Manzoni, whose full Christian names were Alessandro Francesco Tommaso Antonio, was born in Milan on March 7th, 1785, being the only son of Don Pietro Manzoni, then about fifty years of age, a descendant of the old feudal lords of Barzio in the Valsassina, near Lake Como. The estate of Don Pietro, however, was near Lecco, the peasant life around which his son so perfectly reproduced. Don Pietro had married Giulia, daughter of Cesare Beccaria, known as a social economist and author of considerable ability; and this lady, herself gifted and literary, by no means got on well with her husband, and finally settled principally at Auteuil near Paris, and resumed the use of her maiden name. Little Alessandro was put out to nurse in a farmhouse in the hills near Como, his foster-mother being a lively story-teller, and no doubt contributing considerably to the stock of folk-lore with which the childs mind became charged. At six years old he became a pupil at the College of the Somaschi Fathers at Merate, which he exchanged later for other schools at Milan and Pavia.
