Excerpt from Annual Report of the School Committee of the City of Charlestown: December, 1856 The School Committee in conformity with the requirements of law and custom, submit the following as their Annual Report. The condition of the Schools is on the whole, favorable; and if during the coming season the City Council provide, as it is now understood will be the case, a new Grammar School-house, and better accommodations for some of the Primary Schools, there can be no doubt that our institutions of instruction, will at the end of another year, maintain fully the reputation which they have heretofore enjoyed, and it is hoped that they will compare favorably with the Schools in other cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The general feeling in our community is believed to be in favor of the most liberal appropriations for purposes of instruction, and City Councils and School Committees will fail to meet the expectations and demands of those who place them in authority and entrust this precious interest to their charge, unless they provide fully for the comfort and the thorough instruction of every child whose home is within the limits of our city.
