The outstanding fact, however, was the menace of radicalism. That menace was real, not psychological. Russian Bolshevism, to our surprise and dismay, did not collapse, as we had expected it to do. And as a lurid sky reflects the red light of a fire at night to great distances beyond the horizon, so the thick clouds of after-war suffering and despair reflected to the ends of the earth the fearsome glare of the Russian revolution.
