Excerpt from The Political and Occasional Poems: Winthrop Mackworth Praed The Political Poems of Winthrop Mackworth Praed are here offered to the public in a collected form; and an engagement undertaken many years ago, when these pieces were omitted from the edition of his Poems in two volumes which was published in 1864, with my assistance, by the late Rev. Derwent Coleridge, is thus fulfilled. In the interval I have been enabled to make the list more complete than it could at that time have been made, particularly in respect of the poems here included in Part I. of the volume; and the lapse of time has removed some objections, resting upon personal considerations, to the republication of the whole. The necessary information for selecting poems of Praed´s authorship from among a multitude of others, scattered through the columns of a variety of newspapers, has been derived in the first place from manuscripts and scrap-books in the possession of members of the poet´s family, and from the recollections, above all, of the sister who was, during the whole period covered by the first and second series, his principal correspondent, and the depositary of his confidence.
