William De Witt Hyde: As President of Bowdoin College, Wednesday June 23, 1886 Gentlemen of the Boards, Brethren of the Alumni and Friends: It is a welcome and auspicious day which has brought us to the inauguration of the new President of our College. It is our own profound conviction, in which we are confirmed by the cordial approval and co-operation of all who have a knowledge of the facts of the case, that it is the good providence of our God which has led us to the exercises of this hour. On former occasions of the death or removal of eminent Presidents and Instructors of this College, we have often been constrained sadly to exclaim "Sol occubuit"; but by the rich blessing of God we have still been enabled to add "Nox nulla secuta est!" So is it to-day; whatever we have lost, all is brightness and joyousness of prospect for the time to come.
