The Appendix, nearly as long as the preceding part of the book, is added, partly in defence of the teaching already stated, but chiefly on its own account, for the importance of the things which are involved in what is set forth in it. The author is one of those who think that the teachings of our Lord and His Apostles are often in our day very much obscured to us by the preconceived notions which we put into them, and by which we interpret them to ourselves. His object in this whole book will be accomplished if any receive any new light from it on the subjects spoken of. The quotations from the New Testament are given from the Revised Version.
