Excerpt from Annual Report of the School Committee of Thecity of Boston, 1885 In accordance with the provision of the Statutes and under the Rules of the Board, the committee appointed to prepare the annual report of the School Committee of the City of Boston for the year 1885 present the following statement of the condition of the schools, briefly alluding to the most important subjects which have received attention from the Board during the year. It is gratifying to the committee to be able to report that the past year marks another advanced step in the history of our schools. The zeal and fidelity of those entrusted with the education of the children of the city in the past have been equalled by the School Committee of the year just closed, as the record contained in the carefully written reports of the standing committees, the superintendent, and supervisors, abundantly testify.
