Excerpt from The Irish Tangle and a Way Out Shortly before leaving Ireland, where I had spent several months, chiefly in going throughout the land telling the people of America´s part in the great war, a friend suggested that, considering I had traveled in all quarters of the country and had met leading men in almost every walk of life, of all kinds of political affiliation and religious belief, as far apart as the Lord Mayor of Belfast and the Lord Mayor of Cork, and the Archbishop of Dublin and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Cork, and had heard their views and aspirations, man to man, my impressions of Ireland and the War should be put in print and placed on the market. The suggestion took me by surprise, as the idea of writing on so fascinating a subject had never occurred to my mind; but, after some consideration, I decided to accede to my friend´s request, in the hope that my effort may help Ireland toward her destiny, and also help some people to a better understanding of Ireland. It may not be amiss to state here that, my visit to Ireland was not the outcome of a desire for a holiday in foreign parts during the war.
