Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Hymns and Sacred Poems, on a Variety of Divine Subjects: Comprising the Whole of the Poetical Remains of the Rev. Augustus M. Toplady, B.A., Vicar of Broad Hembury, Devon, With a Sketch of His Life and Poetry The Rev. Augustus Montague Toplady, B.A., was the son of Richard Toplady, a major, who died at the siege of Carthagena soon after the birth of his son. His mother´s maiden name was Catharine Bate. She was sister to the Rev. Julia Bate, and the Rev. Mr. Bate, rector of St. Paul´s, Deptford; by whom they were married at the above church, December 21, 1737. They had issue, - one son named Francis, who died in his infancy, and our author, who was born at Farnham, in Surrey, November 4, 1740. His godfathers were Augustus Middleton and Adolphus Montague, Esquires; in honour to whom he bore the Christian name of the one, and the surname of the other. He received the first rudiments of his education at Westminster School, where he early evinced a peculiar genius. While a student at that place he accompanied his honoured parent in a journey to Ireland, to pursue claims to an estate which she had in that kingdom. Notwithstanding the solitary state in which his mother was left, she anxiously watched over him with the deepest sympathy of affection, and persevered in a plan for his education and future prospects, which were the principal concerns of her maternal solicitude. The son returned her tender care with the utmost affection. Indeed, so great was the obligation which he always conceived he owed her, that he never mentioned her but in words expressive of sensibility and gratitude.
