While Belorba narrates the story, other characters are allowed to grow, and the reader is provided with a sense that this is a world populated with living, breathing characters. Macdonald has assumed a deliberate pacing for this story. While the narrative of the story is surely interesting, one of the most attractive features of this work is the author´s teachings that he has sprinkled throughout. Macdonald uses his fiction to reveal truth and teach lessons about life, and this book can be read as a meditation on the value of honesty and transparency. The Flight of the Shadow is perhaps best described as a book to read when you are feeling introspective. While lesser known than many of the author´s works of fantasy, this book is a worthwhile read.
