Excerpt from The Process of Government: A Study of Social Pressures It is with unusual interest that we take note of the current demand for a new edition of The Process of Government which Dr. Arthur F. Bentley presented to the world of scholars in 1908. Since this work is now approaching its half-century mark and the demand for it appears to be increasing, we may infer that it has attained the status of a classic. Lowell once said that "a classic is properly a book. which is something neither ancient nor modern, always new and incapable of growing old." To this we may add the comment of George Ade that "a classic is a book that people refuse to let die." The complement of such books since the beginning of time is not large and the addition to the list made by each age is small indeed. And how, it may be inquired, can one know when a book has joined the list of the great classics, or is in process of attaining admission to this exceptional class? There appear to be two measures which apply: The first of these is recognition by frequent quotation; the second is recognition by an insistent demand that keeps the book in print from one generation to another. The Process of Government appears to be a work which satisfies both of these measures. In an introduction to Dr. Bentley´s most recent book: Inquiry into Inquiries, Dr. Sidney Ratner, Professor of History at Rutgers University, made the following comment about The Process of Government: "Today this book is recognized as one of the great classics in the field of political science, not only for America, but for the world at large. Yet, when it was first published, and for almost twenty years thereafter, it shared the fate of most classics: of being cited, but not read widely. In the 1930´s and ´40´s the book was rediscovered, and hailed as a work of genius by increasing numbers of scholars.
