Excerpt from The Carter Intermediate Readers, Vol. 2 This book, the second in the series of intermediate readers, has been constructed on the same ethical principles as its predecessor. The central theme is labor, personal activity with its benefit to the individual and to the community. The theme is enlarged and enriched with anecdote, narrative, description, and poetry, giving the pupil the advantage of a great variety of material with unity of underlying purpose. The subordinate theme portraying the humane treatment of domestic animals, is set forth in a number of incidents which show the usefulness and loyalty of these creatures to man, and their consequent right to proper care from him. Without enjoyment and appreciation of the text, its ethical value is lost. In order that this pleasure in the reading may be present, the matter must be read with a reasonable degree of freedom from mechanical difficulties; hence, while the range and complexity of the thought has been increased, the aim has been to give the pupil an opportunity really to enjoy and appreciate the reading matter, rather than greatly to enlarge the difficulty of the sentence structure, or to increase the number of unfamiliar words.
