Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from In the March and Borderland of Wales In regard to the title of this book it maybe asked, "Why so much of it? Why not simply The March of Wales?" Or again it may prove disconcerting to many to find Gower and further Glamorgan in the Marches, so loosely has the term been used. Right gladly would I commit this little work to an indulgent public with the briefer title - for no one suffers more after inconvenience in a small way from a long one than the author - if I dare! I might doubtless stifle any personal qualms and quite successfully impose an almost venial inaccuracy on the ninety and nine potential readers, but it is that hundredth one who intimidates me. I feel that for the most tempting and sonorous title it is not worth risking the good opinion of ones critical friends and the rebuke of many unknown critics and the further certainty of being told I had not even the excuse of ignorance. Still, I went so far as to discuss the legitimacy of the briefer alternative with two or three of the former. One of them thought it would be distinctly immoral to call a book dealing so much with the border counties The March of Wales. Another thought the liberty was permissible provided that it was conspicuously apologized for in the Preface. I did not like this, as I was quite sure that some who would have passed the title without comment would now note its technical inaccuracy with the air of original criticism. So I chose the less handy but impeccable designation and a quiet conscience. For though march is a term synonymous with boundary, the Marches of Wales came to mean politically, legally and geographically, those slices of Welsh territory conquered by the adventuring Norman barons during the century or so following the conquest of England, and held by them and their heirs as quasi-independent lordships outside the jurisdiction of the Crown.
