I may remark, at the start, that this is the greatest Republic that has ever existed. Should it fail, then government by the people is apparently doomed. I do not expect it to fail. But as Lincoln saw in his day, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." Anyone who will look a little under the surface of our bounding prosperity will see that we are becoming a house divided against itself.
