Excerpt from The Life of William Ewart Gladstone: With a Portrait This little book is an expansion of the article which I wrote for the ´Dictionary of National Biography.´ Or rather, to be chronologically accurate, the article in the Dictionary was an abridgment of this book. Mr. Sidney Lee, not only brief himself, but the cause that brevity is in other men, was on this occasion most generous in the allotment of space. But the career of Mr. Gladstone, which was almost beyond example crowded with events, caused me to pass the bounds, and the article was reduced to about one-third of its original size. Messrs. Smith, Elder, & Co. were then good enough to suggest that it should appear as it originally stood in a volume of its own. They considered that it might be useful as a work of reference for politicians or students of history. It is a dry unadorned narrative of facts with their appropriate dates, and has no claim to be a formal life of Mr. Gladstone.
