Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh This small volume consists of a sketch of one of our most remarkable statesmen, Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, whose comparatively brief career comprises some of the most stirring events of the 18th and 19th centuries. It was his fete to occupy the position of Chief Secretary for Ireland when the Union between Great Britain and Ireland was carried. He was War Minister during the Campaign in the Peninsula, and Foreign Secretary and Leader in the House of Commons from 1812 to 1822. During that period he went as Minister Plenipotentiary to Châtillon, and represented Great Britain at the negotiations for the Treaties of Vienna and Paris. Those who peruse the following pages, will see that Lord Castlereagh, so far from being the old-fashioned Tory that ignorant opinion supposes, was in advance of his time, particularly in his Imperial policy, which was directed, to use his own phrase, towards securing the ´consolidation of the Empire.´ That he was a statesman of far-seeing views is further proved by his action after the Union between Great Britain and Ireland had been carried.
