Excerpt from Correspondence Between Gov; Andrew and Maj.-Gen. Butler General Sherman having been charged with the preparation of an expedition to rendezvous on Long Island, will, on the part of this Department, consult with you as to the troops which can earliest be made available for this service. Sir, - This will be sent you by Brigadier-General Thomas W. Sherman, U. S. Army, who has heretofore communicated with you on the subject of concentrating, in a camp of instruction, a number of regiments of United States Volunteers. As late emergencies may have somewhat interfered with this object, I have now to renew the request that you will put three regiments, as soon as they can be prepared for service, under the orders of General Sherman, who will indicate the place of rendezvous.
