Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Gospel-Criticism and Historical Christianity: A Study of the Gospels and of the History of the Gospel-Canon During the Second Century; With a Consideration of the Results of Modern Criticism So long as there are unbelievers who appeal to criticism and believers who regards it with aversion, no apology need be made for a book which undertakes to show the true nature of the critical process and its actual results. For the appeal of unbelievers to criticism and the aversion to it by the devout proceed in many cases from an imperfect understanding of its aims and conclusions. It is the belief of the author that Gospel-criticism has important lessons both for the believer and the unbeliever, and that the one may learn from it what are the true grounds of a rational faith in historical Christianity, and the other the futility of the attempts ordinarily made to invalidate it. It is the object of this work to show the actual application of the critical process to the Gospels, to indicate the main lines of the course of the criticism of these writings, and to ascertain what is tenable and permanent in its conclusions. A selection of topics was necessary to the accomplishment of the object in view within the limits proposed, and the author has accordingly chosen what appeared to him to be some of the most important subjects with which Gospel-criticism has to deal.
