Although adventure rather than discovery, reprisals and warfare rather than exploration, inspired his voyages, he made discoveries that materially changed the narrow map of the world in his time; and with his rediscovery of California he conceived the idea of a "New England" on the Pacific coast that would rival New Spain, and, as he thought, laid the foundation for it, more than forty years before the establishment of the New England on the Atlantic side of the continent.
