Excerpt from Publications of the Southern History Association, Vol. 10 Wed. Mar. 7. At 1/2 past 11 this morning we saddled up intending to go no farther than the Pecos. Our road lay on the right bank of the creek following very large and lately traveled Indian trails. The bones of horses and cattle, scraps of doth, small articles dropped here and there told of some hapless captive and the late march of a band of the plunderers of Mexico. A ride of 5 miles brought us to the river. This singular stream is not perceptible at all in the valley in which it flows until the traveler is right upon the bank; destitute of timber, or trees except perhaps the stunted mezquite and chaparal which thinly clothe the country, it rolls its discolored and rushing waters in a bed rarely in any place over 40 feet in width, winding from one side of the Narrow valley to the other in abrupt turns and generally so deep as to be impassable by fording - a pocket edition of the Lower no Grande. We encamped about two miles above the mouth of Live oak creek and in a grove of the same kind of tree, which here from its solitary position, no other timber being seen for miles, is quite a notable landmark.
