I have avoided, in the text, all appearance of speaking of these on my own authority; and the examples I have employed to illustrate them have been taken from critics and scholars, many of them Anglicans themselves, all of them devout in their sympathies, and all of them well known to Anglican students. I wish, moreover, to remind the reader that these examples are cited, not as proofs of the results in question, but merely as illustrations of them, which is a very different thing. If the reader takes exception to the examples given by myself, he must be aware that criticism will supply him with an indefinite number of others, the purport of which is similar.
