Later on, by the time it took its first shape in three lectures on "The Scapegoat in Greek and English Drama," an older suggestion of his about the feeling of ayoç in OEdipus had become connected with it. I should explain, however, that the study was not seen by him in its present form, and it may therefore contain statements - or at least emphasis on statements - with which he would not agree. J. S.
