Excerpt from Greater America: The Latest Acquired Insular Possessions The first acquaintance that Porto Rico made with the authority of the United States was in May, 1898, when the American fleet sailed along the shores of the island in a vain attempt to meet the Spanish squadron under Admiral Cervera. At that time our navy threw a few shells into the grand old Castle Morro at the entrance of San Juan harbor, like callers leaving cards as an indication of a future visit. In July, after the destruction of the Spanish fleet and the surrender of Santiago in Cuba, a portion of the American army under General Miles invaded Porto Rico at Ponce, without any serious resistance. The Spanish forces on the island were so small that they were able to offer opposition only in skirmishes to the advance of the Americans through the country.
