Excerpt from The Fitz-Patrick Lectures for 1903: English Medicine in the Anglo-Saxon Times; Two Lectures Delivered Before the Royal College of Physicians of London, June 23 and 25, 1903 It is right to say that these Lectures have been altered since they were delivered, and expanded by the introduction of extracts from the works discussed and of other matter. I have thankfully to acknowledge the help which I have received from Dr. Henry Bradley, who has corrected a large number of inaccuracies in Mr. Cockayne´s translation of the Anglo-Saxon texts; and has made other important suggestions, of which I have been glad to avail myself. Professor Skeat has kindly allowed me to consult him upon some points. I must also express my thanks to the Delegates of the Clarendon Press for undertaking this book, and for illustrating it so fully. The illustrations have been chiefly taken from MSS. in the British Museum, and have been first carefully copied in black and white by Miss E. A. Ibbs; since the faded and sometimes defective coloured figures do not always come out well in direct photography.
