Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from An Historical and Critical Review of the Civil Wars in Ireland: From the Reign of Queen Elizabeth, to the Settlement Under King William; Extracted From Parliamentary Records, State Acts, and Other Authentic Materials Although this Review is in the Nature of an Appeal to the enlightened Part of the Public, yet it has been the Author´s earnest Wish that, in exhibiting every interesting Truth, he should give no Cause of Offence to any Party among us. His Design is to conciliate, not to irritate; and, in the Execution of such a Design, it was incumbent on him, to remove the false Grounds of a Torrent of Invectives, which have of late borne down repeatedly on our good Sense; and which, if not slopped in its Course, may sweep away before it some practicable Schemes for Public Prosperity. If some of the pre-occupied, as is but too common, reject several Facts hereafter related, because they were taught to reject them early in Life: yet they will take the less Offence at our Author, as his Materials arc almost entirely taken from those very Authorities, on which the Invectives we have mentioned, are said to be founded; and, consequently, can admit of no Dispute concerning their Credibility. Attentive solely to the Choice and Importance of his Matter, the Author has delivered himself all along in a plain unadorned Narration; little solicitous about Elegance of Periods, Strength of Colouring, or other Arts of Composition, which are but too often employed to give a wrong Direction to the Reader´s Judgment, especially, when the Writer has any wrong Biass on his own.
