Excerpt from The Hermit of Marlow: A Chapter in the History of Reform Ladies and Gentlemen, - The few remarks I have to offer you this evening are intended to form an introduction to the Shelley Society´s forthcoming facsimile of the poet´s manuscript of his political pamphlet entitled A Proposal for Putting Reform to the Vote throughout the Kingdom. The first lecture delivered to this Society after the Inaugural Address of the Rev. Stopford Brooke was one which I gave on the Vicissitudes of Queen Mab, and which was described as a chapter in the History of Reform. The same description would fit more or less nearly the paper which I read to you on the 9th of February last, concerning The Mask of Anarchy; and indeed many of our subjects during the next few years must perforce come within the scope of such a title. Our subject for this evening, at all, events, is before all things a chapter in the History of Reform; and I fear you will not find in it even so much variety as there has been in previous chapters.
