Excerpt from Charter, Constitution and by-Laws of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York: And List of Officers and Members The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows: Section 1. The members of the Bar Association of the City of New York, of which William M. Evarts is President, James W. Gerard, Samuel J. Tilden, Joseph S. Bosworth, John Slosson, and Edward S. Van Winkle are Vice-Presidents, and all persons who shall hereafter be associated with them, are hereby created a body corporate, under the name of "The Association of the Bar of the City of New York," for the purpose of maintaining the honor and dignity of the Profession of the Law, of cultivating social relations among its members, and increasing its usefulness in promoting the due administration of justice. Sec. 2. Said corporation shall have power to acquire, by lease or purchase, a suitable building, library, and furniture for the use of the corporation; to borrow money for such purposes and issue bonds therefor, and to secure the same by mortgage; and generally to acquire and take by purchase, gift, devise, bequest, subject to the provisions of law relating to devises and bequests by last will and testament, or otherwise, and to hold, transfer and convey all or any such real and personal property as may be necessary for attaining the objects and carrying into effect the purposes of such corporation; provided, it shall not hold any real estate the value of which shall exceed in the aggregate two hundred thousand dollars.
