It was not an anonymous paper, but its statements were vouched for by a responsible name, Sidney E. Morse, Esq., the originator of the Religious Newspaper, and for many years the distinguished and indefatigable editor of the New York Observer. The flippant and personally disparaging notice, in the New York Tribune, of Mr. Morse´s narrative of the important facts which came under his own cognizance, aroused the indignation of many persons, the writer of these papers among the rest, and having coincident facts from his own observation and research, he deemed it to be his duty as a patriot, to bring them forward at this time, not merely for the purpose of defending Mr. Morse from the ungenerous attacks made upon him by the Tribune, but for the more important purpose of drawing public attention to what he believes to be the main political cause of our national troubles.
