In a proper sense they are the key to his character. In the first sentence he fully concedes that those who do not agree with him on public questions are honest in their convictions. Until the day of his death he never doubted the motives of those who opposed him unless the dishonesty of their opposition was easily apparent. I think he sometimes entertained a somewhat indefinite idea that Judge Douglas was not on good terms with his own conscience in his defense of the slave power; for he referred, with a sort of holy though indignant surprise, to Judge Douglas´s flippant statement that he did not care whether slavery was voted up or voted down.
