J. Roy Rowland (chairman of the subcommittee) presiding. Present: Representatives Rowland, Collins and Linder. Opening Statement of Chairman Rowland Dr. Rowland. We are going to go ahead and get started. John Linder has not come yet, but I am sure he will be here shortly. I want to thank all the witnesses here this morning for coming and also thank the veterans who are here and the representatives of veterans´ organizations as well. With all the debate in Washington regarding the current VA health care system and potential changes that may occur under national health care reform, I believe it is imperative that Members of Congress hear from individuals who would be directly impacted by any actions that might be taken. There is no better place than here at home to hear from you. It is critical that your voices be heard and that is why we are having this hearing here this morning. I want to thank my good friend Mac Collins for being here as well, and I am going to hear from him in just a few moments. As I said, John Linder will be here a little later I am sure. At this morning´s hearing, we will receive testimony regarding the current operations at the Department of Veterans´ Medical Centers in the State of Georgia, and particularly those facilities located here in Dublin and in Augusta. It is my hope that this hearing will provide a valuable look at such issues as access to care and availability of services to Georgia veterans. In addition, we will focus on the issue of impending national health care reform and what impact such reforms might have on the operation of the VA health care system. If you saw the headlines in this morning´s Macon Telegraph, you will know that the President has indicated that it will be even later in the year than we originally thought that national health care reform will be considered, that the Administration is going to present a plan. So this gives us an opportunity - a window of opportunity, I believe - to do more to get our thoughts and our actions together insofar as the VA is concerned.
