It is simply a reprint, with additions, of articles in review of the works named in the title, which appeared in the "Presbyterian Review" for October, 1881, and for January, 1882, and in the "Princeton Review," for July, 1878. The last is published as originally written, a few pages having been restored which were dropped to bring it within smaller compass. The Preliminary Remarks were delivered in September, 1881, as the opening lecture of the session in Princeton Theological Seminary. A few paragraphs have been added to the article entitled "Professor Robertson Smith on the Pentateuch," for the sake of greater fulness or clearness in the argument.
