The fact that a system of slavery, involving the chattel principle, is interwoven with the very texture of our political constitution, that, with all its horrors, it is legalized and exists to a large extent in the midst of a nation who pride themselves upon their attachment to liberty and the doctrine of equal rights, has been considered by a large portion of our citizens, a burning shame, and has also been our reproach among the civilized nations of the earth.
